Revisiting the Rainbow Trail
Lillian Wilhelm Smith/Zane Grey Art Show
October 7th through November 27th, 2005
Lillian Wilhelm Smith was an early Arizona landscape painter who was also the cousin of Zane Grey's wife. She first came to Arizona in 1913 to illustrate "The Rainbow Trail" for Grey. She ended up staying for the remainder of her life which didn't end until 1971 in Prescott. During her long life she traveled extensively throughout the state painting landscapes and Indian portraits, and she incorporated Navajo and Hopi designs in a unique dinnerware set commissioned by Goldwaters Department Store. She also illustrated many other works for Grey over the next twenty years. From October 7th through November 27th we will feature an exhibit of Lillian's original art along with other artwork and movie posters for Zane Grey's books and movies. Click here to read Lillian's biography and see a preview of the exhibit.
Once again, the Arizona Historical Art Museum in Sedona will loan the Blue Coyote Gallery several of Lillian's paintings for the exhibit. The Rim Country Museum in Payson will also loan several Zane Grey related artifacts for the exhibit. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Zane Grey Cabin Foundation to help fund the replication of Grey's Arizona cabin.
