"Sky Challenge" by Adee Dodge

Not all of Dodge's paintings are based on Navajo chants.  Some commissioned pieces were of subject matter requested by his clients. The original owner of this painting recalls asking Dodge sometime in the late 1950's if he ever painted buffalo.  Dodge told him he didn't because the buffalo did not hold any symbolic importance in the Navajo culture.   The client assumed he would never own an Adee Dodge painting of a buffalo.  Then several years later Dodge unexpectedly arrived the client's office with this painting.  Dodge told him it was based on a scene he had witnessed in Yellowstone Park the previous summer where he saw a calf head butt a bull.
